Bioko Dog Cener

About us

Specialized Breeder for German Shepherd and Shih Tzu

The illusion and the project of a family that wanted to make a passion the central axis of their lives is what has prompted us to create BIOKO.

The passion that we already developed in our Working German Shepherds is now extended to the care of the little ones that you entrust to us in our Hotel. A legal and responsible center, with a Zoological Nucleus for Breeding and Accommodation, with all the permits, members of ASCELCRE, who will take care of your companion while they enjoy themselves.

A passion, a way of life

When did you start with the Canine Center?
I have been in the dog world since I was 20 years old, which was after I became independent from my parents’ house because they did not allow me to have dogs at home, 30 years ago. I have always been in the world of the German Shepherd. First I started in beauty and then I went to work.

In my beginnings I spent the whole afternoon, after leaving work, preparing dogs for the competition and at the same time I began to have my first experiences in the residence owned by the person with whom I started. This person proposed to me to associate with him, but since I had a permanent job we agreed to try for a month, after that time I had to give him an answer. I worked throughout August 8 hours in the morning at the kennel and 8 hours in the afternoon at my job, but I was very young and I was afraid of leaving a permanent job and I said no for an answer. From then on I was hooked on the dog world, and I have always had in mind to dedicate myself 100% to it.

All this started when my wife and I signed up as entrepreneurs for the Business Marathon of the Miguel Hernández University of Elche. There we presented our Canine Center project, and people found it very interesting, but it was just an idea in our heads.

At the end of the Marathon something had stirred us inside and we began to search for our dream. The first thing was to find a plot where to make that dream come true. 2 years after a lot of visited and consulted plots, we found the plot where the Bioko Canino Center is currently located. Just 1 km. from Elche and on the same road from Elche to Aspe!

We bought the farm and began to build our project on paper and request all the permits to obtain the Zoological Nucleus.

What kind of animals do you take care of in the Canine Residence?
Mainly dogs, since I also breed them, in my case the working German Shepherd, which gives you more knowledge with puppies and adult dogs, although I have also been a breeder of singing canaries, the Waterslager breed (also called Malinois), and I am a Judge on leave of absence for this breed of canaries.

For the future, when we can expand the facilities, since we have just finished the first phase, after 6 months of construction, we would like to make stays for the care of other types of animals, especially cats. But so far it has been a great effort, since we believe that things must be done well.

What types of services do you offer?
As we have just opened our doors, we have started with the canine residence, with day care and long-term accommodation, as well as specialized breeding, initially German shepherd, but we do not rule out any other breed. We also offer a 24-hour subcontracted veterinary service for emergency cases, as well as the dispensing of medicines according to the guidelines indicated by the client’s veterinarian or our veterinarian.

All dogs eat high-end feed, but we recommend our clients to bring their own feed to avoid maladjustments in the dog due to the change in food, since there are 2 adaptations to food, when they leave it and when they return home and from again they take their feed.

The dogs go out 3 times a day, in the parks we have or on the 15,000m2 plot.

As soon as we can, we will offer additional pick-up and delivery services and grooming for the housed dogs.

Describe your center a bit
From our own experience with our dogs and from visiting other canine centers and residences, we have tried to offer the best for our dogs and those who stay in our residence.

Our Bioko Canine Center has an exceptional location as we are close to the ITV of Elche, just 1 km from Elche, at the Elche-Aspe Exit of the A-7 motorway (direction to Aspe) and 15 minutes from Alicante and very close to many other towns.

We have 45 individual rooms between the breeding area and the residence. In addition, there are 3 other quarantine rooms in a remote area in case a specimen becomes ill and thus be able to separate it from the rest. All rooms are made of sandwich panel walls and ceiling. This material has extraordinary insulating properties (thermal and acoustic) that are very important for the rest of the animals housed in our facilities, since we are in a very hot area in summer and dogs need to rest and not bark constantly. Another of the properties of the sandwich panel is that it is an impermeable barrier that does not create bacteria or fungi and does not generate odors.

The rooms are 4 m2 and 6 m2, depending on the needs of each dog, depending on the weight and why not say it on his character, which gives us a capacity of about 60 dogs.

Around there is a lot of accommodation offered by individuals and illegal, which do not comply with hygienic-sanitary regulations and that have not passed the technical inspections that we have passed, so choosing our services gives our clients great peace of mind.

How did you get your Zoo Nucleus?
It has not been easy to find a plot that meets the conditions to be able to have the Zoological Nucleus, which is why we were incessantly for 2 years looking for the ideal site.

We bought the plot, and we began to build our project on paper. We consulted the Ministry and the City Council, and we verified that if the search for the plot had been difficult, the path that remained to us was going to be very complicated and a constant struggle since it is a very long procedure.

First, ask for the urban compatibility of the plot, to have confirmation that the Canine Center could be built on the plot. After requesting the work permit from the City Council, which requested a report from the Ministry for the Promotion of Aeronautical Servitude, since we were affected by the Airport, it also reported to the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment, Climate Change and Rural Development, and various studies were presented , such as Waste Management, since we have to have a watertight deposit for waste disposal. At the same time, we processed the Opening License for the establishment at the Town Hall and once the works were completed we received 3 technical visits, the Urban Planning visit from our Town Hall, for the completion of the works, the Opening visit and the Zoological Nucleus visit, from the Consellería.

Finally, after 6 long months of works, we obtained the completion of the works, the Opening License and our Zoological Nucleus, which we are very proud of for the great effort made, we offer to all our clients: 065A4043.

Without the effort and family support in all aspects, the Bioko Canine Center would not have been possible.

What do you think are the necessary skills to dedicate yourself to professional care?
The most important are passion, illusion, having a feeling with the dogs and of course the experience. Wanting to do things right, learning every day from what our dogs and our clients’ dogs teach us. Always wanting to be a professional, because if not, you better not get involved in this, because you dedicate 365 days a year to it. Without passion and illusion you are not able to bear the rain, the cold, the wind, the heat, because they are there and you have to take care of them, you have to be responsible.

I have been in the dog world for 30 years, there is not a day that you do not learn something, and that a dog does not surprise you, so everything contributes to achieve the necessary skills to dedicate themselves to professional care. And because it was a dream and my wife and I are fighting for it.

Do you think there should be regulated studies for animal care?
Training year after year is very important, which is why I have attended numerous seminars throughout Spain, but certifying that training as well, which is why I completed the Higher University Course in Canine Instruction in Security Operations and Level III Civil Protection, from 625h, as well as the Potentially Dangerous Dog Trainer Course and obtained accreditation from the Ministry of the Interior to teach the “Technical-Professional Area / Canine Guides / Protection and Security, in Training, updating and training centers for security personnel private”.

It is also true that you must know who trains you, because there is a lot of professional intrusion that makes things happen that should not happen, anyone offers themselves as a caregiver, as a behavior modification instructor, even as a breeder, and they do not know that a Zoological Nucleus that supports you, where to carry out this training and those activities and where to raise or house the animals. There are many people with a lot of ignorance of what the law requires.

I miss more training on dog physiology and diseases. In the end, it is oneself who buys books, constantly consults with the vet and tries to catch up on these issues.

How do you see the panorama of animal care in Spain?
Very complicated. 6 years ago we decided to start dedicating ourselves to this, it is now that we have achieved it and it has been a constant struggle and a great effort and investment, so that another does the same as you, without training, without licenses, without complying with all the regulations that you have to comply, without paying Social Security or taxes. Without offering any guarantee to the client and no security.

We have relied on the Association of Legal Centers for Responsible Breeding and Care (ASCELCRE), because we believe that people have to have a place to go in search of services for their pets with the guarantee that everything is in order.

Let’s hope that the panorama changes, for the good of the animals and of our own clients, who are tired of meeting unreliable people.

Why did you decide to dedicate yourself to breeding professionally?
I have the breeder’s affix (d’Altabix) for 18 years recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI).

I have had German Shepherds for 30 years and I have always liked this breed. I bought my dog Gora, a working German Shepherd, and I korung her and IPO I and crossed her with the WUSV world champion, Sam Beit Haboxer Mehagiva, following all the requirements that the German Shepherd Club asks for the brood. From this cross, as no one knew us as breeders, we had to give away the eight puppies, despite the quality of the cross. We donated one of them, Asterix d’Altabix, and he was trained to defend a battered woman, who had come to defend her on 2 occasions from her attacker on the street, in fact it has appeared in the press and on television.

After this experience we spent 3 years without breeding. But having the passion for the breeding and selection of the breed, one always tries again. That is why we bred with Gora again, and this time we have already sold all the puppies.

In time we bought Donna, Gera and Holly in Germany, and Fencci in the Czech Republic, who have been our breeding females to date.

I already knew that I am passionate about training my dogs, but I have discovered another passion, which is breeding and enjoying every moment with the females and their puppies.

Why did you choose the breed(s) you breed?
I couldn’t explain it to you, it’s something special that I feel for the German shepherd breed since I was very little. Just seeing a photo of a German shepherd on the cover of a book already made me feel attracted to the breed.

I do not rule out raising some other breed to which I feel attracted.

Where does your affix come from?
When you process the affix with the Royal Canine Society of Spain, you must put 3 options in order, and they selected the third one for us, “d’Altabix”, which is precisely the neighborhood where we lived, before coming to live here where we have the Bioko Canino Center, which comes from the Arab origin of the city, and of course we love it, since our work and selection bear this seal in the pedigree of our puppies.
What does raising mean to you?
I made the first litter to keep a puppy that would take over from Cairo, which was the dog with which I started in IPO. When I had this litter, I discovered that I loved breeding.

As a breeder, I am excited that the puppies of my kennel name will gradually achieve goals in the sporting world and also leave their stamp on the breeding. It is a job that doing things well will be achieved.

Have you participated in any exhibition or championship?
In my beginnings I have prepared dogs and participated in many monographs and in the Sieger that is held every year (National German Shepherd Breeding Championship).

At work I have dedicated myself more to training, attending, promoting and translating highly competitive Seminars. I have also prepared the necessary tests for the use of the specimen in breeding according to the regulations of the club.

What do you think are the necessary skills to dedicate yourself to professional breeding?
To dedicate yourself to professional breeding, you have to be a person with passion for the breed that you breed, responsible and with great experience in everything related to that breed.

Each breeder has their particular taste in the type of dog they like within the breed. The objective is to know the different bloodlines, to find out what these lines genetically contribute to their progeny and to take advantage of this information to achieve the type of dog that is sought and try to obtain it in our litters.

Do you think there should be regulated studies for animal breeding?
I don’t know whether to say studies, rather I would say passion, previous experience with the dog and being well advised by your veterinarian, because things must be done well. I don’t think it should be raised without any kind of knowledge about the dog world. One must have knowledge about the dog’s heat, the dog’s diet during pregnancy, childbirth, puppies and their diet, as well as deworming, vaccinations, microchipping, pedigree processing, etc.
How do you see the panorama of breeding in Spain?
In Spain, breeding is very uncontrolled, almost no one pays attention to what is legally required to breed. The Zoological Nucleus is required and it can only be bred like this, which means that the sale of many puppies that is currently done is not legal.

Few of us breeders have stopped making excuses and have made the decision to comply with the Law by obtaining the Zoological Nucleus. Fortunately we are growing more and more but there is still a lot of work to be done.

How do you help customers choose the right puppy?
Normally, from the very moment the puppy is born, I publish photos and videos so that clients can get an idea of what the puppy is like, what its character is like, if it is very active or more calm, and with that they can get a idea of what the puppy is like. We usually talk by phone, and the client usually asks me for advice indicating what type of dog he is looking for and which one may be more suitable according to the activity that the client is going to offer him, sometimes I can even advise him that it is not appropriate to acquire a dog. dog of the breed on which he consults me, since sometimes the dog’s needs may not be fully covered. Other times, the client is familiar with the breed and since I live with the puppies and the mother, they consult me to make the best choice about what they are looking for. Many other times, they are guided by the physical appearance of the puppy, because they have loved it. Others, in addition to having all the information that I provide, submit them to their own tests, such as the Campbell test.

Our
philosophy

Our philosophy is based on animal welfare and respect for each of our canine companions. To us, each dog is a unique individual with distinct needs and personalities, and we work to understand and meet these needs as effectively as possible.
